About 46 thousand drug addicts pack correctional facilities

The narcotics law gives a mandate to rehabilitate drug users.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG -- Some 46 thousand drug addicts pack correctional facilities and detention houses across Indonesia. Director General of Correctional Facilities of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Sri Puguh Budi Utami stated that while inaugurating the Central Java chapter of Indonesian Association of Correctional Officers (Ipkemindo) here, on Thursday.

"Nearly 115 thousand out of some 259 thousand prisoners and detainees are involved in drug abuses," she stated.

About 46 thousand of the prisoners and detainees involved in drug abuses are those that require rehabilitation, she noted. "The narcotics law gives a mandate to rehabilitate drug users," she added.

As long as the tens of thousands of drug users still serve their sentence in correctional facilities, they will certainly try to meet their drug needs by any means, she explained. The circulation of drugs within correctional facilities will continue to happen if drug users are still there, she stated.

Actually, the drug users want to be rehabilitated at the correctional facilities. However, their health and social rehabilitation are not supported by other resources, she elaborated.

If the drug users are rehabilitated outside the correctional facilities, the density rate of 522 correctional facilities and detention houses across Indonesia will decrease, she noted. She added that the correctional officers played an important role in reducing the density rate of correctional facilities and detention houses.

The occupancy rate of correctional facilities and detention houses has never declined, she said.

"Correctional officers play an important role in reducing the jail term of prisoners," she pointed out.
