REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is currently evaluating paid baggage policy implemented by Lion Air Group since January 22. Director General of Air Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Polana B Pramesti said the Ministry found several things that must be followed up since Lion Air and Wings Air applied paid baggage policy.
Polana explained the two airlines should know that there were still many passengers who did not understand the procedures for purchasing prepaid baggage. Most of passengers pay the baggage at check in counter.
"There are so many passengers buy at the check in counter with the excess baggage ticket (EBT) price," said Polana at the Kemenhub Building, in Jakarta, on Friday (Feb 1).
Polana said the EBT price was more expensive than prepaid. She assessed that Lion Air had not socialized prepaid baggage fare properly.
"The public not yet aware of the prepaid baggage price, so the paid baggage policy is widely complained," said Polana.
In addition, Polana said that the purchase of prepaid baggage service via Lion Air's official website still had a number of drawbacks on the system, including prepaid baggage purchase for direct, connecting and transfer flights by Lion Air, Wings Air, Batik Air or a combination of thereof.
Following the evaluation, Polana asked Lion Air Group to be more intensive to socialize prepaid baggage rates service.
"Prepaid baggage is very cheap, just Rp10 thousand per kilogram," said the Head of Sub Directorate of Information Evaluation System and Air Transport Services at the Directorate General of Air Transportation, Putu Eka Cahyadi, who was met on the same occasion.
Putu assessed that currently the passangers were not ready to manage their baggages with the current policy. In fact, according to Putu, if the passangers could pay attention to the right way, the cost of the luggage would be more economical.
