RENO, NV (KOLO) Millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry are here at the Diamond Vault in Reno.
The diamond vendor isn't like a typical jewelry store.
Nevertheless the owner here does say giving jewelry over the holidays, or proposing on New Year's is not uncommon.
“Kind of seen a little bit of a decline in Christmas proposals,” says Brian Brewer, owner of the Diamond Vault. “But a lot of proposals Thanksgiving and Christmas and certainly around New Year's,” he says.
Eleven years ago, Brewer began the “Snow Day Giveaway.”
Customers who buy merchandise between the days after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve stand a chance of getting their money back.
The deal: If it snows six inches or more the Reno Tahoe Airport on January 1st, all purchases made during the time frame after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve are free.
“Refunded. Except for the tax,” says Brewer.
Brewer says he takes out an insurance plan to cover the costs should 6 inches of snowfall on January First.
This year he says, there was about an 18% increase in cost for the policy.
It's not like there haven't been close calls.
He says in 2019 6 inches of snow fell at the airport on January 6th.
And believe it or not, Brewer wouldn't be heartbroken if six inches of snow fell on New Year's Day 2020.
It all boils down to promotion, promotion, promotion.
“We are hoping that it happens because it would be tremendous for you to come out again, and giveaway $500,000 or $400,000 worth of jewelry. It would be pretty amazing,” says Brewer.
