SHEBOYGAN - An 18-year-old Sheboygan man was charged with felony theft last month after his grandmother noticed valuable jewelry was missing from her home and then saw it at a local jewelry store three days later.
According to the criminal complaint:
On Nov. 22, Susan J. Kraus reported that about $38,000 worth of jewelry was missing. She didn't see any signs of forced entry, which led her to believe it was taken by someone who had access to her home.
Kraus informed officers that her grandson, Dominic J. Weber, had been at her home on repeated occasions and even had a remote for her garage door opener.
Kraus knew the items weren't just misplaced because she inherited the jewelry from a friend and didn't wear it often because she wasn't comfortable wearing such expensive jewelry. She had the items appraised after she received them from her friend, and one of the missing items, a diamond and sapphire bracelet, was valued at $14,000.
Three days after she noticed the items were missing from her jewelry cabinet, Kraus recognized the bracelet and one of her $10,000 diamond rings at Kisiolek's Jewelers on Eighth Street in downtown Sheboygan.
Officers obtained a search warrant for the store's records and searched for Weber's name. The records showed he had sold items to the store in June and July of 2019 and included photos of the items he sold: two rings, a gold necklace, a pocket watch and gold earrings.
Another record from March included a handwritten note with Weber's name and address on it. The items were listed as sold by one of Weber's friends, but the owner of the store said Weber didn't have identification on him that day and therefore couldn't make the sale on his own. That sale included the bracelet and ring Kraus had seen at the store.
When officers made contact with Weber on Dec. 17, he admitted that he took jewelry from his grandmother's house at least three times and sold it to Kisiolek's. He said his friend did not receive any of the proceeds from the sale that was under his name.
An arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 6.
