Ringleader of crew that stole jewelry, high-end clothes from malls gets 10 years in prison - NJ.com

The ringleader of a crew of thieves that stole high-end clothing and jewelry from stores in South Jersey and Pennsylvania has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

Louis Mathis, 49, of Philadelphia will also have to pay $398,960 in restitution and be subject to three years of supervised release after finishing his prison term, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Philadelphia said in a statement Tuesday.

The crime spree began on March 29, 2016 when Mathis and a member of his crew stole $120,000 in diamond rings and other jewelry from Sears in the Deptford Mall, according to charging documents.

In a second New Jersey heist, Mathis, Hasan Knight and another man stole $6,229 in rings and other jewelry from the same store on June 7, 2016, officials said.

Finally, on Nov. 13, 2016, Mathis, Knight and two others took $5,335 in Ralph Lauren Polo brand clothing from Macy’s in the Moorestown Mall and then fled to Philadelphia in a stolen Infiniti QX56, authorities said.

Mathis was also part of a crew that committed a smash-and-grab robbery of $200,000 in jewelry at Zales in Philadelphia Mills on Aug. 17, 2016. Fifteen days, earlier Mathis, Knight and an associate barged into Helzberg Diamonds at Montgomery Mall in North Wales, Pennsylvania and stole $67,396 in jewelry by breaking open display cases, authorities said.

Customers and employees were in the store at the time of both Pennsylvania robberies robbery, court papers said.

After each of the thefts, Mathis fenced the stolen items to shops on Jewelers’ Row and South Street in Philadelphia and to designer clothing sellers, the prosecutors said.

Mathis and Knight previously pleaded guilty in October to Hobbs Act robbery and interstate transportation of stolen goods. Knight is scheduled to be sentenced Friday, also in federal court in Philadelphia.
