Thieves posing as utility workers steal jewelry from homes in Bayside, Mequon - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

At least two North Shore families have been robbed by men posing as utility workers in recent weeks.

The first incident was reported at about 1 p.m. Dec. 12 in Bayside. The two men targeted a house in the 8800 block of Mohawk Drive, where they told an 87-year-old woman they were from the water department and needed to check her faucets, according to a police report.

One of the men accompanied her to the basement, where he asked her to watch the water coming from the faucet to make sure it was working. The second man stayed upstairs and spoke to her 93-year-old brother.

The woman told police that the man walked around the basement, looking around. When she asked the man for identification, he said he didn’t have any. He said he was from the “city.”

The woman then asked the man to leave and followed him upstairs. She said the two men spoke a foreign language to each other, but she did not recognize it. The next day, the woman realized she was missing four rings and a gold chain. The woman estimated the jewelry was worth about $800, according to the report.

The second incident occurred two weeks later in Mequon. In this robbery, a man posing as a We Energies employee took more than $100,000 worth of jewelry from a home in the 10500 block of North Fairway Lane.

An 81-year-old woman and her 53-year-old daughter, who live at the home, told police that shortly before 2 p.m. Dec. 26 an older male "portrayed himself to be a utility worker, entered their home, tricked them and ultimately stole numerous pieces of jewelry, and other valuable keepsake items," according to the police report.

The older woman told police that the man "had her daughter and (herself) stand in the basement for an estimated time of 30 minutes conducting a water test while he stole items from several locations inside her home," the report said.

The daughter "stated that the subject wore a yellow and orange vest and thought she saw We Energies on it," according to the police report.

We Energies informed Mequon police that no work was being performed on its behalf in the area that day.
